As with many other products, a certain amount of maintenance is required to keep a floor in good condition. With proper maintenance, your hardwood floor will retain its beauty for years to come. Our floors are durable and easy to maintain, but there are some things you need to think about.

Protect your floor against dirt

Keep gravel and sand outside

The first thing you can do for your wood floor is get a good door matt to clean and dry shoes before coming in. Ideally both in and outside the door.

Put protective pads on furniture

Place felt pads on the bottom of table and chair legs. Do not use protectors made of metal as they can wear patches and scratch the floor.

Light floors need more attention

If you have light wood floors, you’ll need to clean them a little more often because they are more prone to wear.

Cleaning and maintenance

Cleaning hardwood floors

Dry cleaning is the best way to clean hardwood floors. Vacuum and clean with a broom regularly and occasionally use a damp, well wrung-out cloth/mop. For best results, use Kährs Spray Cleaner. Remember that Beech and Hard Maple floors are extra sensitive to moisture.

Removing marks

Remove marks as soon as possible using Kährs Cleaner. Avoid cleaning fluids containing ammonia.

Oiled floors: Strong stain removing agents and hard scrubbing can lead to discolouring. Oil the cleaned area with Kährs Satin Oil. If there is a color difference after removing the stain, you can use a colored Kährs Touch-up oil.

Finished floors: Strong stain removing agents and hard scrubbing can affect the finish.

Wood floor maintenance tips

Oiled floors should be re-oiled immediately after installation and prior to use. Both oiled and finished floors can be freshened up when the wood floor becomes hard to clean or if the surface gets scratched or dull.

Oiled floors: Use Kährs Satin Oil.

Finished floors: Use Kährs Lacquer Refresher.

Do not attach adhesive tape!

Dents and scratches

Repairs - Oiled floors

Repair of oiled and waxed wood surfaces

Use Kährs Satin Oil for shallow dents and scratches. For deeper scratches, use Kährs Touch Up Oil. For very deep dents, scratches and cracks, first fill with Hard Wax or Wood Filler.

Repairs - Finished floors

Repair of finished wood surfaces

Use Kährs Lacquer Refresher for shallow dents and scratches. For deeper scratches, use Kährs Touch Up Lack. For very deep dents, scratches and cracks, first fill with Hard Wax or Wood Filler.

Maintenance and care of factory-finished floors in commercial environments:

Our factory-finished surface can be strengthened with a further coat of finish to improve moisture resistance, but this is not necessary if use is similar to a domestic environment. However, note that an additional layer of finish may change the appearance of the floor's surface.

Day-to-day cleaning should be carried out using dry methods.
Do not allow the finish to become worn. This will avoid dirt and water penetrating the wood, ensuring the floor will retain its easy-clean surface.
If the floor is very worn, or needs renovation for some other reason, it can be machine-sanded to bare wood and have a new surface treatment applied.

Maintenance and care of oiled floors in commercial environments:

The factory-oiled surface must be reinforced with Kährs Satin Oil directly after installation and prior to use.
Day-to-day cleaning should be based on dry methods such as vacuuming or sweeping, as use of water and cleaning agents increases the need for further maintenance.

Wood floors require regular oil treatments. The frequency of treatments depends on its use and amount of foot traffic. Note that areas that are subject to greater wear than the rest of the floor can be partly treated.
If simply renovating the surface treatment is insufficient, the wood floor can be machine-sanded down to clean wood, then re-oiled."
